GETTING STARTED

There are exceptions to the truism “you get what you pay for.” Buying a French Cycling bike is not one of them. This is not a cost. This is an investment. A chocolate bar is a cost. Once it’s gone – end o’ story. A good touring bike is an investment. A continuing story. More than simply reliable transportation. It’s also your confidante, dream facilitator, passport to adventure and your best travellin’ pal. So – ya need to find the best travelling pal possible. N’est ce pas?

Here are the “Friendship Qualities” to look for:

THE FRAME.

Light n’ strong. Here’s where “more”(dollars) is,most often, mo’ beddah.$400-800 should getcha 90% of the cycling enchilada. In this price range the frame will likely be “cromoly” – a tasty blend of chrome and aluminium.

The more pictures of dead presidents you have to play with – the lighter the frame. The nth degree being carbon fibre. After that, it’s “the sky’s the limit price club.” Frames built with stuff NASA is only dreaming about!

TIRES.

Don’t, repeat don’t economize here. This is what “floats yer boat.” So invest in the best. $25 to $45 per tire is the range. I use, and recommend, the “Dutch perfect” brand.(Even tho’ they’re not paying me for this. Hint-hint!) This tire has an interior layer that traps tire-puncturin’ nasties. Preventin’ ‘em from doin’ in the rubber you float on.

The “Dutch Perfect’s” come with a one year guarantee. (in normal use) I’ve used them abnormally (what else?) six months with no punctures…… but two (one front, one rear) “tube failures” due to heat and weight. Sadly, there are no “quality options” for tubes.

Should ya carry a spare? This is a “should I wear a helmet?” question. Depends on yer comfort zone /weight preferences. But, in a zillion and a half years of cycling, I’ve only had a tire explode on me once. (Front one, at that!)

TUBES.

ALWAYS a minimum of two spares. I used to repair tubes. But(again, “too soon old -too late smart”) all the hassle/time/aggro of finding the puncture, marking it applying the glue, waiting for it to set, applying the patch, “proving” the patch..etc (getting tired already are’nt ya?) Finally burned the truth into my tiny brain. This is a classic definition of false economy. Ok – I’m not a zillionaire yet but $5(or less)to avoid this dance? – sign me up!

SADDLE.

What non-bike folks call “the seat.” Like a good mattress it should be firm.(ie-support not surround) Softy/foamy saddles are for “girly men” and Sunday cyclists who’s idea of adventure is a 10 mile(return) expedition to “Lattes ‘r Us.”

DA BG recommends an all leather saddle. England’s “Brooks” makes one of the best. Several models, Again, they’re not paying me for this glowing endorsement.

The reason a leather saddle is the “bee’s knee’s”,”the cat’s pyjamas”, and the greatest thing since all night pizza, is that it morphs, ab/fab and uniquely to fit yer rear. The bad news is that the morphing process is two weeks of “I’m sitting on a concrete block” hell! But -hang in(actually hang on) there. Cus’ after that….you’ll be ridin’ with a happy butt.

ACCESSORIES.

Panniers.

Technically an accessory. But, practically, a necessity!

Mimimum two decent sized(ie -not “Sunday cyclist” size) on the back. Ideally, also,”low riders” – frames that attach to yer front forks supporting two smaller(but not tiny) cheap panniers. These “friends on the front” will not only give you a better balanced “unit”, but are essential to carry all the goodies those friendly foreign folks are gonna be tryin’ to weigh ya down with.

My M.O. is to put all the stuff I don’t use during the day in the front – leaving at last half vacant for the swag! (”Build it, and it will come.”)

Water.

Mimimum of two one litre bottles. Or the “camel style” back paks, with “tube feeding” for hand free guzzlin’.

Should ya buy the super spendy insulated bottles? Depends, as always on yer wallet. My experience is that they’re great, for about an hour. (Keep in mind I’m usually in 35-40° celsius heat, every day) Being the boy scout I am, my solution is to freeze the standard (non-insulated) plastic bottles, then tape ‘em with aluminium foil in the a.m.

They’ll defrost slowly, keeping ya cool through most o’ the day. However, as your Nutritionist/Doctor has probably told you, as good as that cold aqua goes down on a boiling day, water does ya the most good at room temperature. (No happy medium here.)

Lights.

Really jonesin’ to barrel down those country roads in da pitch black? Then lights will definitely decrease yer chances of an unexpected meeting with a Sanglier. (The French wild boar. Think small, hairy Rhinoceros.)

Reflectors.

On the bike. And/or around yer ankles. Why not? Inexpensive and practical. (Now there’s a combo ya don’t see often!) And, chances of you cycling in twilight, are much greater than those of “Sanglier surfing.”

GPS.

Since I’m from the “getting-lost-is-part-of-the-adventure” school, I can’t give ay any….ahem……”guidance” here. A map, a mouth, and half a brain(on a good day, bien sur) usually saves my bacon.

Counters.

If you’ll be countin’ sheep all night cus’ you don’t know how many kms of adventure you did…….get one. Personally, I could give a rat’s ass. But it is the logical question everyone you meet is gonna ask. I just tell my friendly froggies where I started – and let them do the math!

Parts.

Unlike those four wheeled metal monsters who offer you the unrivalled thrill of waiting for you part to arrive; or even better, waiting to see if your part even exists, and if so, can be ordered – bike parts are bike parts. A brake cable is a brake cable. In the mall super store, or the back o’ beyond.

That should get ya started on your French Cycling adventure.

Anything I missed?

Table tennis was once considered just a game, but now it is very much a sport. After all, there are such things as ping-pong tournaments and this activity is even part of the Olympics. So, if you want to become a professional athlete in this field, good for you! Excitement and plenty of challenges await you, along with all the satisfaction and rewards. Before you proceed though, here are some tips that can help you achieve your goals.

Start by laying your hands on reliable table tennis information. Read books, listen to expert advice, enroll in a course, and browse the Internet. Learn what paraphernalia are needed, find out about the rules, and decide whether singles or doubles is best for you. Make a decision as well on whether you would need a coach or not, commit to memory all the jargon used in the field, and see how you can train and continually improve yourself. Moreover, find out how matches flow and how scores are made. In short, do what you have to do to fully educate yourself about this sport.

After that, you have to train, train, and train some more. Aim to improve your endurance, reaction time, and flexibility. You will need all these to face all the challenges ahead of you. Just be careful not to go overboard with the training because you could end up with sprains and other injuries. So, learn the value of resting and letting your body recover as well. Aside from this, it is also important that you eat healthy and take really good care of your wellbeing.

Finally, you have to learn how to spot your weaknesses and do your best to conquer them. For help on this matter, do not be afraid to join matches. The more experience you get, the better you can assess which areas you need to improve on.

Learn more at the Table Tennis Set Guide about choosing the right table tennis gear to optimize your game.

The limits of outdoor sports and recreation have been pushed further every season with lighter, stronger, and cheaper materials composing clothing and gear. Not enough credit is given to one particular item – thermal underwear. Who uses it? Professional athletes, adventurers, and extreme sports stars do – and so should you if you go anywhere during the winter months. Do you ski? Or go mountain biking, abseiling or on hiking trips? Modern thermal underwear is one of the most important items you can pack for survival situations. It can literally save your life if you find yourself getting unexpectedly stranded without means to heat your car, boat, shelter or even your home. Does this happen to “normal” people? Just ask someone who’s little adventure went a bit wrong and ended up lost…or one of the 6 million Canadians who were without power for several days, a couple of years ago…had that been winter, there would have been many casualties from exposure to cold. Think of thermal underwear as a cheap insurance policy. It doesn’t cost a lot (you can find tops and bottoms for about $20 a set) and does not take up much space in your trunk, backpack, or underwear drawer.

Modern thermals are very comfortable and inconspicuous, coming in short and long sleeve designs and in fairly standard colors. Most would be mistaken for t-shirts or underpants, and don’t stick out from regular clothing. Modern production also does away with bulky seams, most of which are now welded with adhesive rather than sewn. The result is that you should not even notice you are wearing them while playing sports or engaging in outdoor activities. Cotton, wool, and acrylic fiber are all used to make thermals, and of these natural wool fiber is still considered the best. It is also the most expensive, but has the advantages of being super soft, highly insulative , as well as maintaining a good performance even when it gets wet. This is important because it is when you get wet that you are at maximum risk of developing hypothermia in severe weather conditions. Not just for outdoors either – stay comfortable and warm in the cold office, at home, or on long train trips. Thermals can make your life a lot easier!

You might have recently decided to join the literal millions of folks that have decided that they simply have to get into better shape. The trouble with this is, it might not always be practical to implement a huge routine into your already busy life. So, you should be aware of some advancements like the toning belt.

What would you consider a toning belt to be? Well, actually it just fits under the classification of any other normal exercise equipment and legitimate machines that you use to help you lose weight or to tone your muscles. This is no more than the exercise solution for when you cannot find the time to use other full sized machines.

All you have to do, is to strap this little device over the area of your body that you want to target. More often than not, this is the stomach and the abdominal muscles. That is really the whole process that you have to do. Strap the belt and put it into place, and then let it work its magic while you are doing other things.

So how does it work? Well, the best way to describe the process, is that the abdominal toning belt itself emits signals into your body that trigger the nerves in the area. When they receive this signal, they contract and then relax. So while you are just sitting or standing there, your body is working towards a tight and toned body.

But you might be thinking that there is really no saying that this actually works. In a way, you would be right. You see, there is very little to suggest that it doesn’t work and a good amount to suggest that it does, however, the only person that can say if this is going to work for you is you. So, if you are willing to try it out, go ahead and do it.

You might have been curious about a sauna slim belt and how you might be able to benefit from the use of one, and hopefully you were able to pull some helpful information from this article

The Saucony brand name has become synonymous with producing a quality mens running shoe that is tailored towards people with all different kinds of gaits and arches. If you naturally pronate when you walk, Saucony has a shoe to address that situation. If you suffer from having flat feet, Saucony has the right fit to get you back on your feet for extended periods of time. The way we walk, run, jump, etc. all differ from person to person. Saucony shoes address the usual problems that people have with their feet and allows them to exercise without pain. Here’s a quick look at some of Saucony’s current offerings for shoes:

Saucony ProGrid Echelon Men’s Running Shoe

With an inner-sole that is designed for people with low arches or full volume feet, the ProGrid Echelon offers the stability, durability, and performance that few shoes in the marketplace can offer. With extra cushioning added to the sole and heel of the shoe, the ProGrid Echelon is great for larger walkers/runners who need more foot support.

Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7 Men’s Running Shoe

The ProGrid Triumph 7 is one of the newer shoes that Saucony has recently released to the market. If you find yourself to have a neutral gait or are a supinator (putting weight on the outsides of your feet when you walk), the Triumph 7 provides long-term comfort and durability to withstand those long runs. Terrific shock absorption and energy-returning materials, the ProGrid Triumph 7 allows runners to perform their best by eliminating pain and protecting the legs and feet from unnecessary shock.

Saucony Hurricane 11 Men’s Running Shoe

If you have a tendency towards over-pronation and/or are looking for some additional comfort and stability in your shoe, look no further than the Hurricane 11. Providing a smoother heel-to-toe transition, the Hurricane 11 easily adapts to variety of foot shapes and provides a snug fit to increase the support that is made available to the runner during long training periods. The mesh on the top and sides of the shoe also provide a great deal of moisture removal to prevent bacteria from forming. The Hurricane 11 is a great shoe if you plan on getting a lot of miles out of your running shoes. From its added cushioning to its overall ability to securely hold your foot in place, the Hurricane 11 is a great choice for any runner.

Saucony ProGrid Omni 8 Men’s Running Shoe

Probably the most popular of all Saucony running shoes, the Omni 8 is designed to give the runner extra heel cushioning and a much more normal heel-to-toe transfer. It also builds on the previous Omni 7 model by providing more support for moderate over-pronators. Like the Hurricane 11, the mesh material will allow for adequate moisture wicking, and the heel is reinforced to absorb some of the shock associated with running an abundance of miles.

Saucony continues to produce great men’s running shoes for guys that are either neutral, pronators, or supinators. By manufacturing a wide range of shoes, Saucony is not just catering to one standard form of men’s running shoe. The versatility which this provides to shoe stores across the world makes Saucony an extremely successful company.

Dancesport is the sports version of ballroom and latin american dancing. There is a strong international scene of dancesport but the sport is particularly strong in Europe and the US. So how do you progress from beginner dancer to dancesport competitor?

Well for me it all started with a few beginner dance classes. Wellington, my home town, has a number of competitive dance studios and I randomly chose one of them – and I was hooked. I have quit several times but the dance addiction keeps drawing me back into dancesport.

Dancesport has two main branches internationally standards (aka ballroom the five dances are waltz, tango, foxtrot, Viennese waltz and quickstep) and latin american (chacha, samba, rumba, paso doble and jve). In Australia and New Zealand we add another sixteen (yes really) New Vogue dances which range from fast waltzes (e.g. Lucille Waltz) to tangos (e.g. La Bomba) to marches (Gypsy Tap).

Competitions are divided by both age (ages range from 6 to 60+) and ability (there are five levels you win through locally). Competitors have the same partner throughout – indeed one of the keys to succeeding in competitive ballroom dance is the ability to find and keep a compatible partner. After all with practices up to five nights a week you spend an awful lot of time together.

The feature that strikes most first-timers at a Dancesport competition is the costumes and the hair an makeup. Dancepsort really believes in the more is more school of fashion. The reason is simple – there may be up to 16 of you on the floor in a heat all trying to attract the judges attention. If they don’t look they won’t even see your beautiful foot work – wearing the wrong colour dress can be as bad as forgetting the routine!

So be warned that innocent dance class can result in a full-blown dancesport addiction.

As runners we tend to quickly replace our worn out outerwear with little hesitation. We have to always keep in mind that our most important piece of gear is our shoes. Being that running is demanding and taxing on our bodies; shoes are our first line defense.

As our first line of defense we must choose the correct shoes for our body, running surface and distance. Running with improper shoes results in 80% of running injuries. Your shoes should only be used while running as they are designed to provide traction and support.

Most of us agree that our running shoes are our most indispensable item, yet they are also our most expensive piece of gear. Be willing to make the investment as potential injury will cost you more in the long run. Ask your sales associate for help when fitting your shoe. Your shoes must fit your body type, running program, your foot arches running surface and distances. Many stores today have in-house treadmills with high-tech built in programs that read your gait and pronation. If you shop around and look for a discount sportswear store, it’s possible to get good deals on high quality shoes.

If you run more than three days a week it is wise to rotate two pair of shoes. This allows your shoes to rest and in turn extends their lifespan. Replace your shoes every 350-400 miles and check for wear and tear every 3-4 months. Only wear your shoes while running.

Running shoes range in price from $50-$250 per pair. Feel free to keep your options open to non-brand shoes. The quality is still there if you find the right shoe. You may not have as many colors and fun styles to choose from but you will eliminate paying the name brand prices.

To maximize your run look in to the additional cosmetic and fun accessories that you can add to your program. Some accessories are functional such as watches that record speed, time and distance or mini-wallets that attach to your shoe. There are several safety accessories to choose from such as reflectors, blinking lights and weather gear. Of course fun accessories are out there too. You will find several varieties of MP3 and iPod players. Your workout wear is even available with special pockets to hold your music devices and slots for your ear buds. Don’t forget socks! under armour socks are made to be comfortable and durable, and they’re a great choice for running.

There are hundreds of types and styles of shoes to choose from. Take your time and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Your body will thank you!

Whether you like to tear up the roads cycle racing, or prefer to go “off-roading” on your mountain bike, one thing you will certainly need is a pair of cycling glasses. They will offer much needed protection against flying debris, whether that is dirt and dust on the highways, or mud and broken twigs on the cross country bike trails.

Cycling eyewear is designed to fit perfectly, whatever your style. There are several brands that cater to the road racers, and which offer many ranges suitable for hobby cyclists and professional cycle athletes alike. For the road, cycling sun glasses are generally made to wrap around the head so that the wind cannot blow into your eyes. They fit closely to the face, and most have air vents in the frames to prevent fogging up when you are exerting yourself. Otherwise, they are worn just like normal glasses.

Because of the nature of mountain biking – which is less about smooth, fast riding, and more to do with jumping over rough terrain, with the added risk of crashes – riders tend to wear cycling goggles instead, which are held on by an elasticated strap. Most brands of mountain biker cycle glasses are made to accommodate the fact that the riders also usually wear full face helmets, so they offer protection and comfort.

If you are shortsighted, both road cycling glasses and mountain biking goggles are available with prescription lenses, though you may need to find a specialist brand that provides this option, especially for the goggles. However, this is a far better option than trying to wear goggles over the top of normal eyeglasses. If you cannot find a good pair of prescription ones, you might be better off wearing contact lenses, and you then open up the wide range of options available to normal sighted people.

Whichever terrain you specialize in, always aim to get cycling eyewear that is made from tough polycarbonate, so that it can withstand the shock of being hit by debris. Also look for the right color of lens for the light conditions you will ride in. There are loads of colors available, so it is best to consult the manufacturers’ websites to find the correct ones for you.

Exercise can sometimes become a burden. Tired from work, the daily routine, the same fitness program and workout results that sometimes occur too late are just some of the reasons many people give to themselves to stop exercising. We offer some suggestions that stop people who exercise from thinking of reasons like boredom or fatigue.

Join a group to exercise together

It is important to be happy to go to the gym. If you will join a group and you will convince yourself that you have common interests. The time spent at the gym will go faster. Furthermore, you will meet new people and you can also create your own group at the gym. This group will motivate you in case you want to quit.

Bring a friend with you to the gym

Everything becomes easier when there are two persons working together. If the routine is a hindrance to your daily exercise plan, your partner will give you a boost and those few hours you spend at the gym will be more pleasant than ever. It can be a person that shares the same goals and you can even start the same fast weight loss diet at the same time.

Get a yearlong gym subscription

If you go to the gym regularly and you have not yet made a yearlong gym subscription, you should take some time to think this through. A yearlong subscription is actually a guarantee to the fact that you will attend all classes you already paid. And furthermore gyms have equipment and trainers that can help you make a plan. For example every respectable gym has elliptical exercise equipment that can help in weight loss, muscle building. Also the trainer is there to teach you.

Exercises following a strict schedule

Every muscle must be worked out. If time for a type of exercise is too short, the session is unnecessary. Just skip it and do the next exercise in line.
